Gluster 3.1: Getting Started
From GlusterDocumentation
The first step in creating and configuring your storage environment involves building your storage cluster and creating the volumes that will hold the data. This section provides an overview of how to get your storage cluster up and running as quickly as possible.
Build the Storage Cluster
Building your storage cluster involves defining the projected cloud size, adding servers, and formatting the disk partitions on the servers.
To build the storage cluster:
- Add one or more servers.
You install additional storage servers one after the other by booting the server into the Gluster Storage Platform and selecting the additional server installation mode. This mode attempts to connect to the first server automatically.
On the first server, do the following:
- Launch the Gluster Management Console on the first server.
- Click the Servers tab.
- Click Add Server.
The first time you add a server, a dialog appears allowing you to specify the number of servers you plan to add to the storage cloud (unless you already specified this earlier using the Projected Cloud Size section under the Settings tab).
Gluster begins searching for additional server installations.
- Use your installation media to boot additional storage servers, as required.
Insert the USB stick into a USB port on the second server and boot from it. The initial screen times outs in 60 seconds and automatically proceeds to remotely install the additional server.
After finding a server, the Management Console on the first server displays pre-configured network settings for the server. You can modify these settings, as required. For more information, see Adding a Server.
- Format the data partitions (one time configuration per server).
You need to format the data partitions of newly-added servers to enable them to be used as storage space. You can do this by completing the following:
- Click the Servers tab.
- Select the data partitions and click Format Disk.
This initiates disk formatting in the background. The status column displays Ready when the formatting is complete. For more information, see Formatting a Disk.
Create Volumes
A volume is the storage space in the storage cluster. You can create a volume by doing the following:
- Click the Volumes tab.
- Click Create Volume.
For more information, see Creating a Volume.
